OLE HENRIKSEN

What is it like to be Ole Henriksen?

"I found my vocation and fell in love with it. It was a fluke, really."

As a child in Denmark, Ole did not always have healthy skin. Like so many Danes, he was a sun worshiper. He gave up a career as a social worker when he fell in love and traveled to Indonesia. "I lived the party lifestyle and paid for it with cystic acne. I was drinking like a fish, eating whatever and trying to hide the results by spending more time in the sun."

Ole got treated for his skin ailments with local remedies, herbs and plants. He was fascinated as much as he was cured. "I found my vocation and fell in love with it. It was a fluke really." He studied cosmetology in London and worked at a solon in San Francisco until he moved to LA in 1974. "I got my first break when I cured a patient of acne. She happened to be the assistant of an editor at the Los Angeles Times. I got busy pretty quickly and the phones haven't stop ringing."

We talked about some of the changes in the spa industry that Ole has seen in the 25 years that he has been having fun. "It wasn't a natural choice for me to go into skin care. There were practically no men in my profession when I started and very few men clients. Now I we get more and more men at the spa. The last ten years have been transformational. It's been wonderful to see some of our women clients encouraging the men in their lives to try spa treatments."
